Lithuania is beginning to construct a German military base near the Russian border.

On August 20, Jinshi Data reported that Lithuania began construction of a military base on Monday. By the end of 2027, the base will accommodate up to 4,000 German troops ready for combat, marking the first permanent deployment of German troops overseas since World War II. Last year, Germany pledged to deploy troops in NATO and EU member states bordering Russia. Lithuanian Defense Minister Raimundas Vaiksnoras estimated that the country will spend over 1 billion euros (about 1.1 billion U.S. dollars) in the next three years to build the base, making it one of the largest construction projects in the country's history.
